Food & Organic Waste Management
Food waste is one of the biggest waste problems in Singapore and the amount of food waste generated has grown by around 20% over the last 10 years and it is expected to increase with the growing population and economic activities. In 2019, Singapore generated approximately 750 million kg of food waste. Only 18% of the total food waste was recycled in 2019, according to our NEA. But things gradually are changing as more of our Singaporeans and companies are becoming more environmentally conscious. This increases our carbon footprint, contributing to global warming and climate change. Therefore, there is a need to manage food waste holistically.
Why has this been a problem?
Food waste makes up about half of the average 1.5 kg of waste daily disposed of by each household in Singapore. In this, more than half of household food wastes can be prevented, as rice, noodles & bread being the most commonly wasted food items.
40% of what goes into recycling bins can’t be recycled. This is because some people throw in items which are unsuitable for recycling at all.
To conserve precious resources, there is a need to minimise food wastage and recycle or treat unavoidable food waste. This starts with avoiding excess food production and food wastage. Where this is not possible, excess/unsold food should be re-distributed. Also, food waste should be segregated for recycling and treatment. Generating electricity from used water and food waste.
The four important components of Food Waste Management strategies are:
- Prevent and reduce food wastage
- Redistribute unsold / excess food
- Recycle/ treat food waste
- Recover energy
Our services on waste management and rubbish disposal solutions include:
- Routine Collection
- segregation and Recycling of General Waste
- Horticultural Waste
- Construction Waste
- Food Waste
- Wooden Waste
which are unsuitable for recycling.
